Samsonite Brand - Over a Century of Innovation

Samsonite It is a brand that has been a trailblazer and pioneer of a new way of thinking about travel. Since the early 1900s, the company Samsonite has been creating luggage designed for frequent travelers: comfortable, durable, and lightweight models capable of enhancing the travel experiences of even the most discerning travelers. Even today, what sets the Samsonite collections apart is the innovative materials used to create ultra-lightweight and functional bags, suitcases, trolleys, and carry-on luggage suitable for any type of trip.

The Story of Samsonite

Samsonite—originally known as the Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company—was founded in 1910 in Denver, Colorado, by Jesse Shwayder, a trunk manufacturer and pioneer of a new approach to travel luggage: lightweight, versatile, and stylish.

Innovation, a core value of the brand from the very beginning, was already evident in the advanced prototype of the traditional wooden trunk, redesigned by Shwayder himself with the addition of metal corners and studs intended to enhance its design, durability, and comfort. Building on the early successes of its founder—supported in the family business by his brothers Maurice, Ben, and Mark, the brand grew in popularity, becoming a leading player in the global luggage industry thanks to the production of suitcases and travel bags that meet the needs of travelers worldwide.

Between the 1940s and the 1970s, Samsonite introduced a series of innovations destined to make their mark on the market, thanks to the introduction of new materials and linings: the leather-effect lithographed cardboard covering, introduced with the “Samsonite” Streamlite suitcase in 1941, was the first example of an affordable (faux leather) travel accessory, a classic in the luggage market, which began to shift its focus toward travelers beyond the elite.

The originality of the production and the sophistication of the materials best suited for travel are the foundation of the many innovations that Samsonite has brought to the industry: from the introduction of the integrated frame—patented in the ultra-durable Silhouette hard-shell suitcase—to the launch of the Samsonite Attaché, the first 24-hour briefcase designed for managers in the 1960s; meanwhile, production of the first “Samsonite” suitcase—made of ultra-lightweight and durable polypropylene—dates back to 1969.

Choosing a Brand Name

In 1965, the Shwayder company officially changed its name to Samsonite in honor of its flagship product, the “Samsonite” suitcase, which was produced in the company’s early years and inspired by Samson, a biblical figure who embodies the values of strength and endurance.

In 1973, Samsonite was acquired by the Beatrice Foods Group, though it continued to operate independently within the Group through its subsidiary, Samsonite Forniture Company. It was during this period that production expanded to include low-cost travel goods, designed for new generations of frequent flyers.

Samsonite Luggage – Success Built on Innovation

From the early 1980s through the late 1990s, the Samsonite brand went through a turbulent period, marked by its acquisition by various international corporate groups, which shaped its corporate destiny but not its production, which remained focused on innovation.

In fact, these were the years that saw the launch of the Samsonite Oyster, the first hard-shell suitcase with snap closures; the more maneuverable Ziplite, with a zipper closure, made of polypropylene; and also the first aluminum suitcase, the iconic Xylem (1998), which became famous in the James Bond film “The World Is Not Enough,” starring Pierce Brosnan.

Samsonite Luggage: A Blend of Tradition, Originality, and Style

Today, Samsonite is a premium international luggage brand that stays ahead of the curve by creating new, smart travel solutions: from hard-shell luggage lines, such as the ultra-lightweight Samsonite Lite-Shock trolley, made from CURV polypropylene, a patented material that guarantees lightness and long-lasting durability; to carry-on trolleys in soft honeycomb fabric, such as the Samsonite PopSoda models. The Samsonite travel collection is rounded out by travel duffel bags and beauty cases, work backpacks, and laptop bags.

At Studioarch, you’ll find the best offerings from Samsonite, including items and collections inspired by that blend of originality, tradition, and innovation that have made history in the world of travel leather goods.
